Swindon U3A

Further Information for the Orienteering Group

Learn about orienteering maps and navigation. Try this exciting outdoor sport where you can walk, jog or run as you please and find your way between checkpoints. Learn the basics in a few sessions in different Swindon parks (Coate Water, Lydiard, and The Lawn), try out your skills in a local wood (West Woods, Marlborough) and attend an organised orienteering event. For those who get bitten by the orienteering bug, further visits to organised orienteering events can be arranged.

A contribution of 1 per session to cover costs of printing maps and materials will be sought. Share travel costs to venues outside Swindon. Entry to organised events expected to be about 3. Sessions before Xmas will be fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons. Visits to organised events will be arranged when available and may be an hour or so drive from Swindon. Comfortable clothing and footwear (eg. trainers) for ease of movement and appropriate to weather are recommended. Bring a compass if you have one, although it is not essential for the first two sessions. Each session will have an additional / alternative activity for those last years' members who are now confident of the basics.
